About the Firm

A firm built around one question at a time

We do not accept every matter that comes to us. We accept the ones we can help with, and we give them our full attention.

Our Story

Founded on a simple premise

Bumi Advocates was established in Singapore with the straightforward conviction that people dealing with pension questions deserve legal counsel that takes its time. The retirement years represent the accumulated work of a lifetime; the arrangements that govern them should not be set in order under pressure.

The firm concentrates on three areas: reviewing pension positions so clients understand what they hold, representing clients when a pension recalculation appears incorrect, and assisting those who want their long settlement — will, lasting power of attorney, CPF nominations — set out as one coherent whole.

We operate from Gateway East on Beach Road, and we take appointments Monday to Friday. Our fees are stated clearly before any work begins, and they do not change without discussion.

Our Mission

Clarity, without the rush

Our mission is to give clients a clear and accurate picture of their pension position, and then — if they ask — to act on their behalf with steadiness and care.

We believe that most people who come to a legal firm with a pension question are not looking for aggressive representation. They are looking for someone who will read the documents carefully and explain what they mean. We try to be that person.

Where a matter requires formal action — correspondence, a submission, a hearing — we take it at the right pace, not the fastest pace. We do not believe that speed and quality are the same thing.

The People Here

The solicitors and staff you will work with

RA
Principal Solicitor

Rajan Arumugam

Called to the Singapore Bar with over eighteen years in practice, Rajan has spent the greater part of his career in matters touching on CPF, pension schemes, and related estate work. He takes the view that a thorough reading of the documents is always the first step.

LH
Associate Solicitor

Lim Hui Shan

Hui Shan handles the firm's recalculation representation work, conducting the correspondence and preparing submissions with care. She joined Bumi Advocates after four years at a larger firm, and prefers the pace of a smaller practice.

TM
Client Liaison

Tan Mei Lin

Mei Lin manages appointments and is usually the first point of contact when clients call or write. She is patient with questions, and she takes care to see that clients are not left waiting for a response longer than necessary.

How We Work

Standards that govern our practice

Regulated Practice

Bumi Advocates is a regulated law practice under the Legal Profession Act (Singapore). All solicitors hold a valid practising certificate issued by the Law Society of Singapore.

Clear Fee Agreements

Before any work begins, we provide a written cost agreement. Fees do not change unless the scope of the matter changes, and any change is discussed and agreed before proceeding.

Client Confidentiality

All client communications and documents are held in strict confidence, consistent with the professional obligations imposed by the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct) Rules.

Thorough Document Review

We read the material before we give an opinion. Our assessments of pension positions and recalculations are based on the actual documents, not assumptions about what they are likely to contain.

Plain Language Reporting

Our written reports are designed to be read by clients, not other lawyers. Where a technical term is necessary, we explain it. Where it is not necessary, we do not use it.

Personal Responsibility

Each matter is handled by a named solicitor who is responsible for it from start to finish. Clients are not passed from one person to another without explanation and agreement.

Pension legal work in Singapore

Singapore's pension and CPF system is layered. Most working adults have more than one retirement arrangement — the foundational CPF accounts, employer contributions, supplementary schemes, and in some cases private pension policies acquired during employment abroad. Seeing all of these together, in one ordered document, is often the first step toward understanding what a retirement will actually look like.

Bumi Advocates works in this space with care and familiarity. We understand how recalculations are conducted by the relevant bodies, and we know where the common errors arise — in the application of CPF interest rate rules, in the treatment of voluntary contributions, in the handling of transfers between schemes. When a client brings us a recalculation that does not look right, we know what to look for.

Long settlement planning — the coordination of will, lasting power of attorney, and CPF nominations — is work that many people put off because it feels difficult. We try to make the process straightforward. We meet with clients at their own pace, we explain the options plainly, and we produce documents that are clear and properly executed.
