Accounts from those we have worked with
We share these accounts because we believe that the most honest description of a legal firm is the one given by its clients.
Back to HomeIn their own words
"I came to Bumi Advocates after my pension was recalculated following a change in my employment status. The figure did not look right to me, but I had no idea where to begin. Rajan reviewed the documents and wrote to the relevant body on my behalf. The outcome was a correction in my favour."
Pension Stratum Review · March 2025"The Long Settlement Planning service was what I needed. I had been putting off making a will for several years — it always seemed complicated. The firm made it straightforward. My husband came along to one of the sittings and found the process helpful. Everything is now in order in one folder."
Long Settlement Planning · February 2025"The Pension Stratum Review gave me a document I could actually read. I had CPF, an employer pension, and a private scheme from years of working abroad — I had never seen them all in one place. The process took longer than I expected, but the result was thorough."
Pension Stratum Review · January 2025"Hui Shan handled my recalculation case with patience. There were several rounds of correspondence and I was kept informed at each point. She explained the process in terms I could follow. The firm did not make promises about the outcome, which I found more reassuring than if they had."
Recalculation Representation · March 2025"I was referred to Bumi Advocates by a colleague. The firm was small, which I was initially uncertain about, but it proved to be an advantage. I dealt with the same person throughout, and he knew the details of my matter without my having to explain them each time I called."
Long Settlement Planning · April 2025"I needed the CPF nomination updated as part of a broader review after my circumstances changed. The firm helped me understand how the nomination relates to the rest of my estate planning, which was something I had not considered. The advice was practical rather than theoretical."
Pension Stratum Review · February 2025Three matters in outline
Recalculation corrected after employer restructuring
A client's pension was recalculated following a corporate restructuring that changed the terms of her employer's scheme. The new figure was lower than she expected, and she could not determine whether the calculation reflected the correct terms of her original contract.
We reviewed the original scheme rules, the restructuring documentation, and the recalculation workings. We identified a departure from the scheme's transitional provisions and prepared a written submission to the scheme administrator.
The scheme administrator accepted the submission and revised the calculation. The correction represented a material improvement to the client's annual pension entitlement. The matter was resolved through correspondence without the need for a formal hearing.

Stratigraphy clarifies complex multi-scheme position
A client approaching retirement had worked in Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia over a career of thirty-five years. She held CPF accounts, a UK occupational pension, a Malaysian EPF balance, and a private annuity — and had no clear picture of how these related to each other.
We gathered the documentation for each holding and produced a stratigraphy that described each layer in order — its current value, its access terms, its interaction with the others, and the steps needed to draw from it at retirement.
The client described the document as the first time her retirement situation had made sense. She subsequently used it as the basis for updating her LPA and will, which we also assisted with as a separate instruction.

Long settlement prepared for widower with adult children
A client in his early seventies, recently widowed, wished to ensure that his affairs were properly set out. He had two adult children with different circumstances and was uncertain how to handle the distribution of his CPF balance alongside his other assets.
We met with the client on two occasions and, at his request, his daughter attended the second meeting. We prepared the will, the LPA, and updated the CPF nomination, aligning all three with his stated intentions. The sittings were unhurried.
The bound folder was delivered within six weeks. The client noted that having everything in one place — and having his daughter present during the discussion — had given him a degree of ease about the future that he had not expected to feel so quickly.
